There are quite a few cities in the U.S. that are named after the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. However, Lincoln, Illinois, is the first and only city in the country to be named for Lincoln before his presidency. Lincoln served as a prominent attorney in the town, and he even christened the town with watermelon juice in 1853. By the railroad depot, you can visit a watermelon statue to commemorate that moment.

If you’d like to learn more about Abraham Lincoln, you can visit the Lincoln Heritage Museum. This museum explores the life of Lincoln, from his humble roots growing up in a log cabin to his historic run as President of the United States. The Lincoln Heritage Museum is located in Lincoln College, which is one of the largest and most prestigious higher education institutions in the state of Illinois. At certain times of the year, you can also catch performances put on by the theatre department at Lincoln College.

For an attraction that’s a bit more unusual, be sure to visit the giant Railsplitter Covered Wagon. The largest covered wagon in the world features a giant version of Lincoln and is definitely picture-worthy. For some history that doesn’t involve Lincoln, head over to the Heritage in Flight Museum, which displays aviation artifacts dating back to WWI.

After visiting all these sites, swing by the Blue Dog Inn for delicious burgers, sandwiches and more.
