History

People began settling in the Springfield area in 1820 when John Kelly constructed a cabin here. Since 1837, Springfield has been the capital of Illinois. The city was also once the home of Abraham Lincoln, who lived here from 1837 to 1861, which is when he became president. Lincoln also served a term in the legislature at the Old State Capitol.

Museums

Springfield has many sites where you can learn more about Abraham Lincoln. The Abraham Lincoln Long Nine Museum and Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum both teach about the former president. You can also head to the Illinois State Museum, Air Combat Museum and other museums to view intriguing exhibits.

Arts & Culture

You can catch an incredible performance at the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Ballet Company or the Springfield Theatre Centre. Plus, the SAA Collective and James S. Murray Gallery display a variety of art pieces created by local artists.

Outdoor Recreation

You and your family can spend the day outside at the Washington Park or the Union Square Park. The Adams Wildlife Sanctuary has opportunities for hiking trails around the prairie and woodland. At Lake Springfield, you can go fishing or boating as well as participate in water sports. On warmer days, you can also have fun at the Knight’s Action Park.
